Antipsychotics: Neurobiological Bases for a Therapeutic Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Schizophrenia is among the most mysterious and costly mental disorders causing suffering and societal expenditure (1). The lifetime prevalence of the disease is 0.30-0.66% (2). It also results in death 12-15 years earlier than expected resulting from suicide, decreased access to medical care and common risk factors, such as poor diet, sedentary life style, obesity and smoking (3). First generation antipsychotics, that cause extrapyramidal side effects (EPS) which nearly nullify the therapeutic outcomes, are quite useful in controlling positive symptoms, but they lack a consistent response to long-term efficacy for negative symptoms and cognitive impairments. The new generation of antipsychotics, led by clozapine, has provided a broader range of therapeutic outcomes by being effective on both positive and negative symptoms and by causing fewer extra-pyramidal side effects. These new agents appeared to cause a risk for metabolic syndrome, including diabetes, weight gain, and hyperlipidemia. This situation may be more complicated than EPS or tardive dyskinesia in long-term therapy. As a result, there is still a strong need for safer and more efficacious ÖZET: Antipsikotikler: Terapötik yaklaşım için nörobiyolojik temeller

Typical and atypical antipsychotics in adolescent schizophrenia: efficacy, tolerability, and differential sensitivity to extrapyramidal symptoms.
OBJECTIVE To review the existing literature on the efficacy and tolerability of antipsychotics for adolescent psychosis. The review focuses in particular on literature regarding adverse effects that are thought to have an increased incidence in young patients and on the possible neurobiological bases for such differential sensitivity. METHOD Pertinent studies were sought using Medline searche...
متن کاملRevisiting Antipsychotic-induced Akathisia: Current Issues and Prospective Challenges
BACKGROUND Akathisia continues to be a significant challenge in current neurological and psychiatric practice. Prompt and accurate detection is often difficult and there is a lack of consensus concerning the neurobiological basis of akathisia. No definitive treatment has been established for akathisia despite numerous preclinical and clinical studies.] Method: We reviewed antipsychotic-induced ...
متن کاملA New Approach to Continuous Riesz Bases
This paper deals with continuous frames and continuous Riesz bases. We introduce continuous Riesz bases and give some equivalent conditions for a continuous frame to be a continuous Riesz basis. It is certainly possible for a continuous frame to have only one dual. Such a continuous frame is called a Riesz-type frame [13]. We show that a continuous frame is Riesz-type if and only if it is a con...
متن کاملToward an integrative model of the spectrum of mood, behavioral and personality disorders based on fear and anger traits: II. Implications for neurobiology, genetics and psychopharmacological treatment.
Current psychiatry relies on a purely categorical paradigm for diagnosis of mental disorders that profoundly impacts research and clinical practice. However, high comorbidity rates and relative non-specificity of family history for psychiatric disorders suggests that this categorical approach fails to identify the underlying diathesis. As an attempt to overcome such limitations, we developed a ...
متن کاملSexual Addiction and its Comorbidity with Substance Dependence
Sexual addiction is characterized by persistent and intense sexual thoughts and acts that have a negative impact on individuals’ life. Sex addicts make many attempts to control or postpone sexual feelings and acts, but these attempts fail. Sexual addiction is not influenced by a specific causal factor, and it is thought that different biological, psychological, and social factors play a role. L...
